The skye times mobile

Time is running out for businesses and creative companies wanting to find space to expand and grow in Staffin.

Fresh expressions of interest in a potential business/storage or arts and crafts space at the area's proposed housing development are being invited but must be in before 4pm on Friday 19 November

Staffin Community Trust announced last month that it had signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association and the Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust to progress plans for a six-affordable house development at a site on the Stenscholl Common Grazing.

As part of the development SCT is keen to confirm whether there is interest, from within or outwith the Staffin community, in potential business unit(s), storage or arts/crafts spaces. Staffin residents had identified the provision of office space in the community as being a pressing issue in a community consultation process in 2011.

SCT is now keen to gauge what level of demand there is before progressing the development plans. The site, which is close to the main A885 road, Staffin Primary School and the bus stop, may appeal to current (or aspiring sole traders) who currently work from home and require office space. A Staffin base may also appeal to public authorities or organisations providing a service. Crafts and arts-related businesses/organisations may also be seeking space.

There have already been two expression of interest from local people which SCT was delighted to receive but given the holiday break it was felt that the mid-October deadline should be extended after feedback that a lot of people were away on holiday.

Respondents should provide as much information as they can, including the space and spec required. Fresh posters will have distributed throughout the community and expressions of interest should be submitted to the SCT development officer Hugh Ross, either by phone, e-mailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
