500 juvenile salmon made a break for freedom during a delivery at Uig Bay.
The fish were being transferred to Grieg Seafood Shetland Ltd's seawater fish farm and, in the process, were lost over the side of the delivery boat this week (May 22.)
The delivery boat, Martin Sæle, is not operated by Grieg Seafood Shetland Ltd but is on hire to the company.
The escaped salmon, which weighed 70 grams each and were in good health, were unable to be recovered.
Grant Cumming, managing director, Grieg Seafood Shetland Ltd, said: “We are extremely disappointed this has happened.
"We will be working closely with the owners of the Martin Sæle to investigate what went wrong and ensure that measures are in place to make sure nothing like this takes place again.”
