Today is ‘Blue Monday’, the third Monday in January which is known as one of the most difficult days of the year.
But the Samaritans are trying to change that by making it 'Brew Monday' - help beat the January blues by getting together with your friends, family or colleagues over a brew.
Brew Monday encourages people to get together and reach out to people who may be lonely. There are many ways to show your support today. There maybe a tea party organised locally to raise funds for the Samaritans but if not why not ring an old friend for a chat, pop in to see a neighbour or meet someone for a coffee - just take a bit of time out of your day to make someone else's who may otherwise be feeling a bit lonely or blue.
Samaritans new report shows that young people aged 16 to 24 report feeling lonely more often than older age groups, they are asking the government to put young people at the heart of its action to tackle loneliness.
Samaritans provides a listening and support service for people who need to talk – for as long as they like and as often as they like. Nationally, Samaritans take a call every six seconds and they describe their life-saving and life-changing service as ‘a privilege and a huge responsibility.’ You can help provide this life-saving service by raising money on Brew Monday.
There are several ways to contact Samaritans, and a fifth service is soon to be launched. Currently you can phone, email or text and in early in 2019 a ‘live chat’ service is to be introduced, allowing people to have real-time conversations with a volunteer who will give them as much time as they need to work through an issue.
Over 1,324 people call Samaritans for vital support every single day. People can call because they feel low, have money or family problems or just need someone to talk to at a lonely time of year. Because the support is anonymous and confidential some people may feel more able to speak freely than they might to family and friends.
You can call Samaritans free at any time, for any reason, from any phone, on 116 123, the website is www.samaritans.org
