The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport is to visit Skye.

It is expected that Jeane Freeman MSP will visit Portree Hospital, which campaigners from the north of the island have been fighting to keep open.

Sir Lewis Ritchie, whose review into healthcare provision categorically stated that the hospital in Skye's biggest population centre must remain open – and have its services enhanced – will be visiting in December to meet with the community and NHS Highland officials to discuss progress made on the implementation of his recommendations.

It is understood that the Cabinet Secretary's visit take place at some point during 2019.

Kate Forbes MSP said: "During my summer tour of the constituency, I met with representatives of the north Skye community to discuss the latest progress on implementing Professor Sir Lewis Ritchie's recommendations.

"The Ritchie report was widely welcomed because of its commitment to enhance services in the north of the island.

"I am delighted that the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport has accepted my invitation to visit the Isle of Skye and meet with the community.

"Sir Lewis Ritchie found that speaking to real people, local residents, campaigners and councillors was critical to ensuring he could recognise the legitimate fears and worries of the people of Skye, and I am confident this will be the case for Jeane Freeman too.

"Whilst I recognise that next year seems far away, it is encouraging to know that healthcare on Skye is well and truly on the Cabinet Secretary's radar."
