Ahead of the peak summer tourist season, Kate Forbes MSP is backing a campaign that is seeking to tackle the scourge of roadside litter across the Highland’s roads network.

Keep Scotland Beautiful have been running their Clean Up Scotland 2018 Spring Clean initiative, which raises awareness of the impact of litter as well as testing out new solutions to help alleviate the problem.

Recent research revealed that more than 100 bottles and cans are found on every mile of Scotland’s roads, and that over 96 per cent of the nation’s main roads are affected by litter.

Kate Forbes, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, said: “Pick your litter up – it seems a simple message but one that is being ignored.

“Our road verges demonstrate that some people are happy to toss their rubbish out the car window and leave their litter for somebody else to pick up.

“It is incredibly selfish to assume that other groups, whether public bodies or private individuals, are going to clean up the litter.

“Ideally, we would all take responsibility for our own litter and take it home or bin it.”
