The skye times mobile

It has served the community for close to a century but this week looks set to see the end of Portree’s Margaret Carnegie Hostel.

Opened back in 1924 to board girls who lived too far away from Portree High School to travel in on a daily basis, demolition of the building’s former annexe has already taken place. Now contractors are expected to begin demolishing the hostel itself over the coming days.

The MC hostel in fact pre-dated the school’s Elgin Hostel which was used for boys’ accommodation after it was built in 1933. That building, now sympathetically restored to a high standard, will serve as a present day hostel for youngsters attending the school as well as housing the Highland Council’s local archive centre.
