Kate Forbes is in the running for the Rising Star award at the Scottish Politician of the Year awards.

The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch is one of four Holyrood backbenchers in the running for the award.

Kate Forbes MSP, who is serving her first-term as a politician after the 2016 Scottish Parliament elections, is a finalist in the ‘One to Watch’ category – which organisers say is “an award that recognises the MSP demonstrating the most potential to rise through the ranks of their party and/or in Parliament”.

She is the only Highland politician from any party to be nominated for an award at the annual ceremony, which takes place in Edinburgh on 17 November.

The recognition for Ms Forbes at a national level has been welcomed by Dave Thompson, her predecessor for the Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch seat.

Mr Thompson commented: “Kate is a Gaelic speaking, young Highland woman with a strong faith and a passion for Scotland, particularly, the Highlands and Islands.

“She has a good head on her shoulders and a superb grasp of the issues and I am delighted that she has been nominated as “one to watch.”

“The people of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch are fortunate, indeed, to have her as their MSP.”

Kate Forbes MSP added: “I’m honoured to be nominated for this award – although I wonder if they’ve got the right person!

“Particularly as a young Highlander, I hope that this demonstrates to young people across the Highlands that you can do and achieve whatever you set your mind on.

“My primary objective is to represent the Highlands, with all of its potential to be the most entrepreneurial, community-based area of Scotland.”
