Twelve months on and Skye businesses are celebrating after news that the island has retained its Fairtrade status. Originally it took a dedicated band four years to receive the certification and at the time Eynort-based Martin Bird, chairman of the Skye committee, said :
“The Isle of Skye is now officially a Fairtrade Island, so well done to everyone who has been involved,”.
“Without all the helpers and supporters this would not have been possible. Now the work starts to let everyone know and to build on local support for Fairtrade to enable us to renew our application in a year’s time.”
Now the committee has been informed that Skye has had its hard earned Fairtrade status renewed and that will run for a further year. Fairtrade products are about providing better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries
