Kinloch Lodge’s Isabella Macdonald was quick off the mark yesterday (Monday October 2) to congratulate the new winner of a Michelin Star on Skye, even though her own restaurant’s star was removed at the same time from the list of Scottish eateries for 2018.
Reacting to the announcement from the Michelin panel, she said: “We are so sad not to have retained our precious Michelin Star after seven years.
“Our wonderful team of chefs, headed up for ten years by Marcello Tully, are as brilliant and dedicated as ever and we will continue to do what we do best – provide delicious and wonderful food in our own unique style.
“Yesterday we were all so very happy and proud of our business and what we do; today we still feel exactly the same.”
And she also praised Skye’s new Michelin Star winner, the Loch Bay, in Waternish, which was only opened in 2016, taking over the fishermen’s cottage premises previously occupied by a seafood restaurant. It describes itself as a “Contemporary Scottish restaurant with classic French influences.”
Isabella went on: “The silver lining is that our dear friend Michael Smith at Loch Bay has been awarded a star and we could not be happier for him and his team. Skye continues to be a destination for food lovers around the world.”
Loch Bay restaurant is the only Scottish restaurant to be given a new star in the 2018 Michelin Guide.
Famous for his appearances on the BBC’s Great British Menu, Michael Smith’s work includes stints at Arta in Glasgow, Le Gavroche in London and the Three Chimneys in Colbost. Michael earned a Michelin star in 2014 as Chef Director of The Three Chimneys.
At the launch of new guide, Michael Ellis, Managing Director of the Michelin Guide, picked out two big changes in the UK’s dining scene.
He said, ‘In Great Britain and Ireland, the last 15 years have been the most transformative of any country.
‘There is a move towards more casual dining. People want to eat well. They don’t necessarily want to get dressed up and eat in a fancy atmosphere. One result of this is a growing number of pubs serving very high quality dishes.
‘We have also seen a new generation of British chefs using British ingredients to create a modern British cuisine which has taken its rightful place on the world stage. And it is attracting visitors from all over the world.’
Other Michelin stars in Scotland – Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles retains his two Michelin stars.
