A petition to reconsider the location for an abattoir in Portree has been formed.

In March 2016, the Highland Council approved plans for the abattoir and incinerator at 3 Leasgeary Road and stated that: "The proposals accord with the provisions of the Development Plan and there are no materials considerations which would warrant refusal of the application."

However, concerns have been raised by members of the public regarding the intended location.

Whilst recognising the need for an abattoir, the petition states that the intended site is close to residential housing and near a busy route for school children and dog walkers.

An environmental noise assessment was undertaken to assess the potential impact of noise emissions from the proposed micro abattoir.  Atmos Consulting Team produced a noise propagation model to predict the noise immission levels at identified assessment locations attributable to the associated heat pumps and heat recovery system.  At all receptor locations, the rating level was predicted to be lower than the background sound level during both the daytime and night-time period.

The petition has 270 signatures at the time of writing on Thursday 10 August.  It can be viewed here.  The full application for the micro abattoir can be viewed at the Highland Council Planning website here.
