Two artists have been selected to begin research and development work on the Crofters' Memorial Project.

The Staffin Trust and ATLAS Arts are working together to investigate the creation of a Memorial.

The Memorial will recognise the crofters' uprising in Staffin in the 1870's.  Their protests in the face of landlord oppression, combined with similar protests in the West Highlands, ultimately led to a historic law offering more protection for crofters.

Sculptor, Henry Castle, and research and design collective, Lateral North, will visit Staffin early this month to begin research.

ATLAS Arts stated: "The panel, comprising members of ATLAS and Staffin Community Trust, were hugely impressed with the quality of the applications."
