Ambitious plans to create new homes in Staffin have now been formally submitted for planning approval to Highland Council.
Staffin Community Trust are a driving force behind the proposal which, if given the go ahead, would see the erection of six dwelling houses, two Class 4 business units and one Class 6 storage unit on land Land 260M South West Of Staffin Primary School.
In their application the Trust say: "A major report, which followed a study of the affordable housing need in Staffin, north-east Skye, was published in September 2014 by the Highlands Small Housing Communities Trust (HSCHT).
The report, which was funded by Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, highlighted the alarming situation in the community including the prohibitive cost of properties for families and young people on the open market and analysed the results of the returned survey questionnaires.
HSCHT concluded there was a clear demand for new affordable housing in Staffin which would be integral for the community’s long term sustainability. One major Staffin business,which employs 20 staff, confirmed it faced problems recruiting or retaining staff on five separate occasions because of a lack of suitable housing. It also stated that it needed “at least four” affordable homes in Staffin to satisfy its current demand."
They added that they had undertaken an extensive land search for suitable sites for development within the Staffin area, working closely with the Highland Small Communities Housing Trust and the Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association.
The proposal is said to have been designed to work with natural patterns of development using features commonly found in the built landscape.
