The new shaped £1 coin

Four new parking meters are having to be ordered for Skye...because they don't take the new £1 coin.

Highland Council is said to be having to order 20 new parking meters to replace not just those on the island but also others in Fort William although elsewhere the meters are reported able to cope with the changing shape and weight of the new coin.

Although the local authority has said the 12-sided coin can be used at its other car parking spaces it will mean having to order and install the additional machines, which could take as long as three months.

The new £1 coin came into circulation on March 28 and the old round £1 will be legal tender alongside the new, more-secure coin until 15 October.

The public are being urged to use their current £1 coins or bank them before they lose their legal tender status.
