There’s no doubt that Skye is more than pulling its weight, at least when it comes to the world of power lifting.
For the tiny island community now has not one but two UK Master champions.
Since he took up the sport Portree’s Davie Hearn has consistently broken records at British, European and World level in the championships staged by the World Drug Free Power Lifting Association.
So no-one should have been surprised when the 75 year old took well- known local endurance athlete, Fiona MacDonald from Uig under his wing and she has now also joined him as a UK Masters Champion.
The pair travelled down to Glasgow for the Scottish Division UK Masters event and against the best in their age brackets were overall winners in the full power event.
Davie said: “That involves three disciplines of squat, bench press and dead lift with a combination of the total lifted going towards the overall title.
“I’ve been coaching Fiona for just three months now, this was her first event and she has come back a champion in the 55-60 years category. That is quite something.”
Although she only weighs in at around 50 kilos, Fiona lifted 60 kilos in the squat, 45 kilos bench and a quite staggering 100 kilos in the dead lift.
“She did tremendously well”, added Davie “and impressed everyone there. Now as a result of her success she will go to the British Championship to be staged early next year and try to qualify for European and from there the World events.”
Not to be outdone Davie retained his title recording a new record in the squat with 105 kilos while matching his previous efforts in the bench with 85 kilos and 150 kilos with the deadlift.
Davie said: “It really has put Skye on the map now in the power lifting world so much so that there is even talk of staging a championship event on the island at a future date. That would really be something and would give the sport a fantastic boost locally.”
